Paul K. Hurst, a.k.a PKH, is an experienced live performance keyboard/bass player, PKH was one half of duo No Shelter, laterly Fascination a club covers act that appeared in venues between Shepards Bush and Glasgow! In 1987 his claim to fame was playing at The Marquee Club on bass with Blue Ice in a national newspapers Battle Of The Bands competition.

Paul K Hurst, who contributed to impOSCar2 and more recently to impOSCar3‘s sound design, kindly agreed to answer a few questions.

Do you have any tips for getting great-sounding patches?

It starts with a good ear for sound. Then having a broad knowledge of different types of synthesis and how that can determine the sound you’re creating. Learn how to emulate your favourite sounds from other synths or artists using the equipment you have. Even if it’s a different synth you can explore ways of forcing your synth to do things that perhaps didn’t seem possible. It can lead to happy accidents and take you down a different path of creation.

Which of your impOSCar3 patches do you consider your personal favourite?

I like ‘Breath Of The Mourning’. It was one of the first sounds I made using the User LFO to create a modulation almost in the audio range giving one of the oscillators a dark breathiness.

Is there anything, in particular, you liked about impOSCar3?

The flexibility of the Wavetable function and User LFO are now insane! Having the option of up to 256 wave positions that be blended together or modulated by LFO, velocity or aftertouch for example in the WT Editor is hugely creative.

I loved the Roland D50, but it’s now been overshadowed by the Access Virus TI2. It does virtual analogue with aplomb and that’s what I need in Tubeway Days when recreating the classic synth sounds of Gary Numan. It also has some similarities with impOSCar3 when using its wavetables for more complex sound design.
