One Sound Design Trick with Arron

Arron not only contributed to impOSCar3‘s sound design but is also a GForce team member. He contributed to most our recent releases but in particular, he was the Lead Software Developer of impOSCar3 so you bet he knows it inside out. He kindly agreed to answer a few questions.

Do you have any tips for getting great-sounding patches with impOSCar3?

I think the poly unison in impOSCar3 is really special. A little detune and an open chord in stacked mode and you have an absolute wall of sound. Use the filter to tame things back a bit and then add some short, big reverb-powerful stuff.

Which of your impOSCar3 patches do you consider your personal favourite?

It has to be Inverted Staircase. The combination of the velocity-sensitive, subtly different LFO rates and the aftertouch control mean you can take it from a bright stab to something almost chime-like with a delicate touch. The reverb then really helps everything sparkle.

Is there anything, in particular, you liked about impOSCar3?

The LFO blend controls are a great touch here. Not seen very often and combined with the USER LFO tables you can morph between 4 shapes in a single patch. This is great for getting a huge dynamic range in the movement of your sound.

If we’re talking hardware, I would probably say the Oberheim OB-8, although it’s not something I get to use for my work, haha. There’s something about those voices in unison that blew me away when I first played one. I think it has the perfect amount of control for when you want to keep the vibes going—not too much to get caught up in the details but just enough to find what you’re looking for.
